Russian keyboard online
Type Cyrillic on any computer.
Your own keyboard types here too, by key position: each key types the character shown on it below (the small Latin letter is your key), Shift for the second one. If your computer is already set to this script, its keys are left as they are.
Nothing leaves your device
This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type, play or record here stays on your device: nothing is uploaded or saved on a server.
Example
Example: “Привет! Как дела?” typed on an English keyboard
You want to write “Hi! How are you?” to a Russian friend, and your keyboard has only Latin letters. Choose Phonetic and type the Latin spelling: each key types the Russian letter that sounds like it.
- Shift with a letter gives the capital: Shift+P types П.
- Letters with no Latin twin have keys of their own: q я, w ш, x ж, = ч, ] щ, [ ю, \ э, ` ё, ' ь and ; ъ. So очень is o = e n ' and хорошо is h o r o w o.
- Typing dosvidanija gives досвиданийа: j is й, so я has to be typed with q.
| You type | Phonetic gives | Standard (ЙЦУКЕН) gives |
|---|---|---|
| Privet! Kak dela? | Привет! Как дела? | Зкшмуе! Лфл вудф, |
| Do svidaniq | До свидания | Вщ ымшвфтшй |
| o=en' horowo | очень хорошо | щ=утэ рщкщцщ |
| Ghbdtn! Rfr ltkf& | Гхбдтн! Рфр лткф? | Привет! Как дела? |
Phonetic is the quick way if you think in Latin letters. On Standard each key types what it types on a Russian keyboard — which is why ghbdtn gives привет there, and why the question mark is Shift+7.
How it works
- Choose Standard (the ЙЦУКЕН layout Russians use) or Phonetic (Latin keys type the Russian letter that sounds alike).
- Type on your keyboard or click the keys; Shift for capitals and ё on the key left of 1.
- Press Copy and paste the Russian text into your message or search.
Frequently asked questions
- Standard or phonetic — which should I use?
- Phonetic is quicker if you know the Latin alphabet: a → а, s → с, t → т, q → я, w → ш. If you are learning to touch-type Russian, use Standard, the layout on Russian computers.
- Where are ё, ъ, ь, ч and щ?
- On Standard: ё left of 1, ъ on the ] key right of х, ь on M left of б, ч on X and щ on O. On Phonetic: ` types ё, ; ъ, ' ь, = ч and ] щ — and Shift gives the capitals, so Shift+= is Ч.
- Can I type Ukrainian too?
- Yes — the virtual keyboard page has a Ukrainian layout with і, ї, є and ґ.
- How do I use the text?
- Press Copy and paste it into your message, document or search box. Nothing is saved: copy before you close the page.
- Why does typing ghbdtn give привет?
- On Standard each key types the Russian letter it carries on a Russian keyboard: G is п, H р, B и, D в, T е, N т. That is the layout Russians touch-type on, so choose Standard to learn it, or Phonetic to type Privet and get Привет.
- Is what I type sent anywhere?
- No. The keyboard works in your browser; the text stays on the page until you copy it.
