Japanese keyboard online
Romaji in, hiragana or katakana out.
Type romaji on your keyboard and it turns into kana as you type (konnichiha → こんにちは; nn or n’ for ん, n’ before a vowel; a doubled consonant for っ; x or l before a vowel for small kana; - for ー), or click the kana below. There is no kanji conversion: the text stays in kana.

Example
Example: こんにちは, ありがとう and ラーメン typed from romaji
With Hiragana chosen, type romaji on your own keyboard: each kana appears as its syllable completes, and letters still waiting show as Composing. Switch to Katakana for the same words in katakana.
- nn before a vowel gives ん and then the n syllable: konnichiha → こんにちは.
- A doubled consonant gives a small っ (kitte → きって); n’ keeps ん apart from a following vowel (kin’en → きんえん).
- The minus key types the long-vowel mark ー, which is how loanwords are written in katakana: ra-men → ラーメン.
| You type | Hiragana | Katakana |
|---|---|---|
| konnichiha | こんにちは | コンニチハ |
| arigatou | ありがとう | アリガトウ |
| toukyou | とうきょう | トウキョウ |
| kitte | きって | キッテ |
| kin'en | きんえん | キンエン |
| ra-men | らーめん | ラーメン |
| ko-hi- | こーひー | コーヒー |
Copy the kana into a message, a document or a dictionary search. It stays in kana: とうきょう does not turn into 東京 here — a dictionary or a Japanese IME does that.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I type ん, っ and small kana?
- ん: nn, or n’ before a vowel (kin’en → きんえん). っ: double the next consonant (kitte). Small kana: x or l before it (xa → ぁ). ー in katakana: the minus key.
- Can it convert to kanji, or kanji to hiragana?
- Neither: it types kana only. To add kanji, paste the kana into a dictionary or a Japanese IME. To turn kanji into hiragana, use the furigana tool, which writes the readings over the kanji or gives the whole text in hiragana or katakana.
- Hepburn or other spellings?
- Both work: shi or si, tsu or tu, chi or ti, fu or hu, ji or zi.
- How do I use the text?
- Press Copy and paste it into your message, document or search box. Nothing is saved: copy before you close the page.
- How do I write my name in katakana?
- Choose Katakana and type the name as it sounds, in Japanese romaji: maiku → マイク, sara → サラ, jesika → ジェシカ, emiri- → エミリー (the minus key gives the long ー). Japanese spellings of foreign names vary, so check the usual form before using one on anything official.
- Is what I type sent anywhere?
- No. The keyboard works in your browser; the text stays on the page until you copy it.
