Example
Example: a one-minute test at 42 WPM and 96.2 % accuracy
Typing test, 1 minute, English words. In the minute you type 41 words without a mistake, 169 letters between them, and press 236 keys in all, 9 of them wrong.
- Characters that count: the 169 letters of the correct words plus their 41 spaces, 210.
- Words per minute: 210 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 minute = 42 WPM.
- Accuracy: 227 right keys out of 236, 96.2 %, with 9 errors. Raw CPM counts all 236 keys.
- A word you fix with Backspace before the space still counts as correct, but the wrong key you pressed stays among the errors.
| Characters that count in a minute | WPM |
|---|---|
| 150 | 30 |

- When time is up, read your WPM, accuracy and errors. Esc starts a new test with new words.
Frequently asked questions
- How is WPM worked out?
- Words per minute counts five characters as a word: the letters of the words you typed correctly, plus their spaces, divided by five and by the minutes. Raw CPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
- What is a good typing speed?
- Most people type 35–45 WPM; 60 WPM and above is fast, and professional typists reach 80–100 with accuracy above 95%. Accuracy matters more than speed at first.
- How does the Japanese test work?
- You type the romaji of each word with the Japanese input turned off: any common spelling is accepted (shi or si, tsu or tu, nn), and the score is keystrokes per minute. The Korean test uses your Korean keyboard and counts 타수, keystrokes per minute.
- How do I get faster?
- Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row and type without looking. The practice lessons teach one row at a time with an on-screen keyboard showing which finger to use.
- Is a 30-second test scored the same as a 1-minute one?
- Yes, per minute: 105 characters in 30 seconds is 42 WPM, the same as 210 in a minute. A longer test gives a steadier figure, because one slip weighs less.
- Does using Backspace lower my score?
- Only through accuracy. Every wrong key you press is counted as an error, even if you correct it, but a word fixed before the space counts in full towards your WPM.
- Is my typing sent anywhere?
- No. Everything runs in your browser; only your best score is kept, on this device.
