Example
Example: a recipe tripled, a board cut to length, and scoops of flour
Everyday sums typed one to a line. Mixed numbers are written with a space (2 1/4); each answer comes with its steps, as a mixed number and as a decimal.
- 2 1/4 cups of flour for one batch, tripled: 6 3/4 cups.
- An 8-foot board (96 inches) with 2 3/8 in and 31 7/8 in cut off leaves 61 3/4 inches.
- A 3/4-cup scoop fills 3 cups in exactly 4 goes.
| Typed | Answer | How |
|---|---|---|
| 2 1/4 × 3 | 27/4 = 6 3/4 = 6.75 | 2 1/4 = 9/4; 9/4 × 3 = 27/4 |
| 96 − 2 3/8 − 31 7/8 | 247/4 = 61 3/4 = 61.75 | Common denominator 8: 768/8 − 19/8 − 255/8 = 494/8, simplified by 2 |
| 3 ÷ 3/4 | 4 | 3 × 4/3 = 12/3, simplified by 3 |
| 5/8 + 3/16 | 13/16 = 0.8125 | 5/8 = 10/16; 10/16 + 3/16 = 13/16 |
| 18/24 | 3/4 = 0.75 | Simplified by 6 |
| 0.375 | 3/8 | The decimal as a fraction |
Every line is worked on its own and brought to lowest terms. A repeating decimal shows the repeat in brackets: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 5/6 = 0.8(3).
How it works
- Type a calculation: fractions as 3/4, mixed numbers as 2 1/3, and + − × ÷ (or * and a spaced /), with brackets if you need them.
- Put each calculation on its own line to work several at once.
- Each answer appears with its steps: the common denominator, the working, the result simplified, as a mixed number and as a decimal.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you add fractions with different denominators?
- Find a common denominator — the least common multiple of the two — and raise each fraction to it: 3/4 + 5/6 becomes 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12, which is 1 7/12. The calculator shows each of those steps.
- How do you divide fractions?
- Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6.
- How do I type a mixed number?
- The whole number, a space, then the fraction: 2 1/3. To divide, use ÷ or : — or a / with spaces around it, since 1/2 without spaces is a fraction.
- How do I simplify a fraction?
- Type it on its own: 18/24 comes back as 3/4, “simplified by 6”, 6 being the greatest number that divides both 18 and 24.
- Can it turn a decimal into a fraction?
- Yes: 0.375 gives 3/8, and decimals can be mixed into a sum, so 0.75 + 1/3 = 13/12 = 1 1/12 = 1.08(3).
- What do the brackets in the decimal mean?
- That the digits repeat: 5/12 = 0.41(6) is 0.416666…, the 6 repeating for ever.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
