Example
Example: 845 students, 52 seats a bus — 16 R 13, so 17 buses
A fifth-grade word problem: 845 students go on a field trip and each bus seats 52. Type 845 ÷ 52, keep “Whole number and remainder” and the US and UK division bracket.
- 8 is smaller than 52, so start with 84: 52 goes into 84 once. 1 × 52 = 52, 84 − 52 = 32. Bring down the 5: 325.
- 52 goes into 325 six times: 6 × 52 = 312, 325 − 312 = 13. Nothing is left to bring down, so the remainder is 13.
- The answer is 16 R 13, written above the bracket, and the check under the working: 52 × 16 + 13 = 845.
| Step | Divide | Multiply | Subtract | Bring down |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 84 ÷ 52 → 1 | 1 × 52 = 52 | 84 − 52 = 32 | the 5: 325 |
| 2 | 325 ÷ 52 → 6 | 6 × 52 = 312 | 325 − 312 = 13 | nothing: R 13 |
16 full buses carry 832 students and 13 are left, so the trip needs 17 buses. The remainder tells you which way to go: for buses, boxes or tables round up; sharing 845 stickers among 52 children, each gets 16 and 13 are left over.
How it works
- Type the division: 7248 ÷ 6, 7248 / 6 or 7248 : 6 — up to five, one a line. Decimals are fine.
- Choose a whole-number answer with a remainder, or a decimal to 1–4 places.
- The working appears set out as at school, then the check and each step in words.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you do long division?
- Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — and repeat. See how many times the divisor goes into the first digits, write that above, multiply it back, subtract, and bring down the next digit.
- What if the divisor is a decimal?
- It is made a whole number first: 45.6 ÷ 1.2 is worked as 456 ÷ 12, both numbers multiplied by 10, which gives the same answer.
- How do I check the answer?
- Multiply the divisor by the quotient and add the remainder: you get the dividend back. 7 × 142 + 6 = 1000. The calculator shows this check under the working.
- Why is the layout different for my child’s school?
- Countries set long division out differently: Germany writes 7644 : 12 = 637 on one line, France and Italy draw the divisor in an L-shaped frame, Spain writes only the remainders. Pick the country under “Written the way it is in”.
- How do I get a decimal answer instead of a remainder?
- Choose Decimal and the number of places. The working puts the decimal point in the answer, adds zeros and keeps dividing: 845 ÷ 52 comes out exactly at 16.25, while 100 ÷ 3 gives 33.33 to two places and shows that the 3 repeats forever, written 33.(3).
- Can I do several divisions at once?
- Yes, up to five, one a line. 845 ÷ 52, 9,500 ÷ 25 and 86.40 ÷ 6 are worked one under the other — 16 R 13, 380 and 14.40 — each with its own working and check. Commas between the thousands are fine.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
