Example
Example: a game on Normal with solid walls, and how the speed climbs
The board is 20 × 20 squares. A game starts with the snake three squares long on the left half, heading right; on Normal it moves 9 squares a second. Each apple adds one point and one square of length.
- Press Start or Space. Left alone, the head reaches the right-hand wall after 15 moves, under 2 seconds on Normal, so turn early.
- Every five apples, Normal and Fast gain half a square a second, up to 6 more: Normal tops out at 15 a second from 60 apples, Fast at 19. Slow stays at 6 all game.
- With Wrap around, the snake leaves one edge and comes back on the other, so only your own tail can end the game.
- Space or P pauses, and so does switching to another tab.
| Apples eaten | Snake length | Slow | Normal | Fast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 3 | 6 a second | 9 a second | 13 a second |
| 5 | 8 | 6 | 9.5 | 13.5 |
| 10 | 13 | 6 | 10 | 14 |
| 20 | 23 | 6 | 11 | 15 |
| 30 | 33 | 6 | 12 | 16 |
| 60 or more | 63 + | 6 | 15 | 19 |
A score of 30 on Normal means a snake 33 squares long crossing the board in under 2 seconds. Your best score is kept for each speed and wall setting, in this browser only. Filling all 400 squares, 397 apples, ends the game with “You filled the board!”.
How it works
- Choose the speed and whether the walls are solid or wrap around, then press Start.
- Steer with the arrow keys, WASD, a swipe or the on-screen buttons; each apple makes the snake longer.
- Don’t hit a wall or your own tail; Space or P pauses.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you play snake?
- The snake moves on its own; you choose its direction. Each apple it eats adds to your score and to its length, so the game gets harder as the board fills up.
- What does wrap around mean?
- With wrap around, the snake leaves one side of the board and comes back on the other, so only your own tail can end the game. With solid walls, touching the edge ends it.
- Does it speed up?
- On normal and fast, the snake gets a little quicker every five apples.
- Can I play on a phone?
- Yes — swipe on the board or use the arrow buttons under it; the page doesn’t scroll while you play.
- How big is the board, and what is the highest score?
- 20 × 20 squares, 400 in all. The snake starts three long, so 397 apples fill the board, which ends the game with “You filled the board!”.
- Which setting is easiest?
- Slow with wrap around: the snake stays at 6 squares a second however long it gets, and the edges are not walls, so only running into your tail ends the game. Best scores are kept separately for each of the six combinations.
- Is anything sent anywhere?
- No. The game runs in your browser and your best scores stay on this device.
