Example

Example: reading 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 on the beginner board

Beginner is 9 × 9 with 10 mines. The first click is always safe: the mines are laid only after it, never on that square or the eight around it, so it opens an area. Along the edge of that area, numbers face covered squares — and some rows of numbers can be solved without guessing.

  1. 1-2-1 facing three covered squares in a straight edge: the 2 needs two mines among the three and each 1 allows one, so the mines face the two 1s and the square facing the 2 is safe.
  2. 1-2-2-1 facing four covered squares: the mines face the two 2s, and the squares facing the 1s are safe.
  3. Flag a mine with a right click, a long press or Flag mode. A 1 with its flag beside it can then be clicked to open all its other neighbours at once (chording).
  4. Chording trusts your flags: if one is wrong, it opens a mine and the game is lost.

Intermediate 16 × 164021615.6 %
Expert 30 × 16 (16 × 30 on a narrow screen)9938120.6 %

The board is won the moment every safe square is open; the remaining mines are flagged for you. Your best time for each level is kept in this browser only.

How it works

  1. Choose a level and click any square — the first click is always safe and opens an area.
  2. Each number tells how many mines touch that square; flag the mines with a right click, a long press or flag mode.
  3. Open every square that isn’t a mine to win; click a number whose mines are flagged to open its neighbours at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play minesweeper?
Open squares one by one. A number shows how many of the eight squares around it hide a mine; a blank square opens its neighbours automatically. Use the numbers to work out where the mines are, flag them, and open everything else.
What are the levels?
Beginner is 9 × 9 with 10 mines, intermediate 16 × 16 with 40, and expert 30 × 16 with 99 — turned upright on a phone.
What is chording?
Clicking a number that already has the right number of flags around it opens all its other neighbours in one go — the fast way to play once you are sure.
How do I flag on a phone?
Long-press a square, or switch on Flag mode so that a tap places a flag.
Do I have to flag every mine to win?
No. The game is won as soon as every square without a mine is open, and the mines left are flagged for you. Flags only help you keep track, and they make chording possible.
Will I ever have to guess?
Sometimes. The mines are placed at random after your first click, so a board can reach a spot where the numbers allow two answers — often a 50/50 at an edge. Look for a pattern elsewhere on the board before you guess.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The game runs in your browser and your best times stay on this device.
