Example

Example: one board, four directions, and the move that keeps the corner

A 4 × 4 game with the big tiles in the top-right corner. Row 1: 2, 4, 8, 16. Row 2: empty, empty, 4, 16. Rows 3 and 4: one 2 each, at the right-hand end. A merge scores the value of the tile it makes.

  1. In a line, the tiles nearest the side you move towards merge first, and a tile merges only once a move: 2 2 2 2 moved left gives 4 4 (+8), and 4 4 8 gives 8 8 (+8), not 16.
  2. After every move that changes the board, a new tile appears in a random empty square: a 2 nine times in ten, otherwise a 4.
  3. Undo takes back the last move; the Best score is kept for each board size in this browser.
Move Points What happens
Up +36The two 16s merge into a 32 in the top-right corner (+32) and the two 2s into a 4 below it (+4).
Down +36The same merges, but the 32 ends in row 3 and a 4 takes the bottom-right corner: the big tile has left its corner.
Left 0Nothing merges; row 2 slides to 4, 16 at the left, pulling a 16 out of the right-hand column.
Right —Nothing can move, so the move does not count and no new tile appears.

Up is the move: the same 36 points as Down, and the 32 stays in its corner. Built from 2s alone, the 2048 tile is worth 20,480 points on its own (the 1024 tile 9,216, the 512 tile 4,096); every 4 that arrived as a new tile is 4 points fewer.

How it works

  1. Slide all tiles with the arrow keys, WASD or a swipe on the board.
  2. Two tiles with the same number merge into one with their sum; a new 2 or 4 appears after each move.
  3. Reach the 2048 tile — or keep going for a higher score; Undo takes back one move.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play 2048?
Every move slides all the tiles as far as they go in one direction. Equal tiles that meet merge into one tile with double the value, and the merge adds to your score. The game ends when the board is full and nothing can merge.
Any tips?
Keep your biggest tile in a corner and build along one edge, moving mostly in two or three directions. Avoid the direction that would pull the big tile out of its corner.
What do the board sizes change?
3 × 3 is tight and hard, 4 × 4 is the classic game, and 5 × 5 or 6 × 6 give room for much higher tiles and longer games.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes — swipe on the board. The page doesn’t scroll while you swipe on it.
How many points is the 2048 tile worth?
Up to 20,480. Every merge scores the tile it makes, so a 4 made from two 2s is 4 points, an 8 is 8 plus the two 4s, and so on: a tile built from 2s alone scores its value times one less than its power of two, 10 × 2048 for the 2048. Each 4 that appeared as a new tile, not made from 2s, takes 4 points off, and every other merge on the board adds to the score.
Can I undo more than one move?
No: Undo takes back the last move, with its points and the tile that appeared after it, and is then greyed out until you move again. It also works after “No moves left”.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The game runs in your browser and your best score stays on this device.
