Example
Example: three equations from homework, solved with every step
Three lines typed into the box, one equation each: brackets, fractions on both sides, and a phone bill — $20 a month plus 15 cents a text came to $50, so 0.15x + 20 = 50.
- Each answer comes first, as a fraction and a decimal when it is not whole, followed by every step.
- A check puts the answer back into the equation: 3(9 − 4) = 15 and 9 + 6 = 15 ✓.
- Two lines with x and y, such as x + y = 10 and 2x − y = 5, are solved together as a system: x = 5, y = 5.
| You type | Answer | Key step |
|---|---|---|
| 3(x - 4) = x + 6 | x = 9 | 3x − 12 = x + 6, so 2x = 18 |
| x/2 + 1/3 = (x - 1)/4 | x = −7/3 ≈ −2.333333 | multiply by 12, the LCM of the denominators: 6x + 4 = 3(x − 1) |
| 0.15x + 20 = 50 | x = 200 | multiply by 20 to clear the decimals: 3x + 400 = 1000 |
x = 9, x = −7/3 and x = 200 — 200 texts that month. Each comes with its working, so you can compare it line by line with yours.
How it works
- Type the equation as you would write it: brackets, fractions such as x/2, decimals, x on both sides.
- Put each equation on its own line to solve several; lines with x and y together make a system.
- The answer comes first, as a fraction and a decimal, then every step and a check.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you solve a linear equation?
- Expand the brackets, clear fractions by multiplying by the common denominator, gather the x terms on one side and the numbers on the other, then divide by the number in front of x.
- What if every x works, or none does?
- If the x terms cancel and what is left is true (5 = 5), every number is a solution; if it is false (5 = 3), there is none. The solver says which.
- Can it solve x²?
- Not here — an equation with x² is quadratic. Use the quadratic equation solver, which shows the quadratic formula.
- Can it solve two equations at once?
- Yes: type them on two lines with x and y, and it solves the system by substitution, elimination or Cramer’s rule.
- How do I solve an equation with fractions?
- Multiply both sides by the least common multiple of the denominators so the fractions disappear, then solve as usual. For x/2 + 1/3 = (x − 1)/4 that is 12: 6x + 4 = 3x − 3, so 3x = −7 and x = −7/3. The solver shows that line.
- Does it work with decimals?
- Yes. 0.15x + 20 = 50 is multiplied by 20 to clear the decimals, 3x + 400 = 1000, which gives x = 200 exactly rather than a rounded number.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
