Example

Example: a 5 × 5 heart solved by logic alone

Row clues from top to bottom: 1 1, 5, 5, 3, 1. Column clues from left to right: 2, 4, 4, 4, 2. The page’s own 5 × 5 puzzles are random shapes, but each one is solved the same way, without guessing.

  1. Rows 2 and 3 say 5: in a row of five squares, fill all of them.
  2. Row 4 says 3: wherever that run sits in five squares, it covers the middle one, so fill it.
  3. Columns 1 and 5 say 2: rows 2 and 3 are that run, so cross out rows 1, 4 and 5. Columns 2 to 4 say 4: rows 2 and 3 are filled, so row 4 is too.
  4. Row 1 says 1 1 with both ends crossed: fill squares 2 and 4, cross the middle. Column 3 can then only be rows 2 to 5, which leaves row 5 with just its middle square.
Clue on a 10-square line Squares sure to be filled
8 squares 3 to 8 (six squares)
6 squares 5 and 6
5 none yet
3 4 square 3, and squares 7 and 8

The heart comes out in four passes over the rows and columns, with no guess. The same overlap rule, a run longer than half its line always covers the middle, is the first move at every size.

How it works

  1. Choose a size and press New game.
  2. Each number is a run of filled squares in that row or column, in order, with at least one gap between runs — fill and cross out squares to match.
  3. When every row and column fits its clues, the picture is complete.

Frequently asked questions

How do you solve a nonogram?
Start with the biggest numbers: in a row of 10, a run of 8 must cover the middle six squares whatever its position. Cross out squares that can’t be filled, and let rows and columns help each other.
Does every puzzle have one solution?
Yes — each one can be solved by logic alone, without guessing.
What are the different sizes for?
5 × 5 is a warm-up for beginners and children; 10 × 10 and 15 × 15 make a relaxing puzzle; 20 × 20 and 25 × 25 are long challenges with detailed pictures.
Can I print nonograms?
Yes — the printable nonogram maker makes PDF sheets with answers, and you can also turn your own picture into one.
How do hints and mistakes work?
Hint shows one square: a wrong mark first, otherwise the next square logic decides. It adds one to Hints and that square stays fixed. Mistakes are counted only when you press Check, each wrong square once.
Is my game saved if I close the page?
Yes, in this browser: the game in progress and the best time for each size are kept, and the clock stops while the tab is hidden.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The puzzles are made and played in your browser.
