Example

Example: finding a chattering left button

An older mouse sometimes opens files on a single click. In the test area, click the left button slowly, about once a second, twenty times, with the double-click threshold at its default of 80 ms.

  1. Each press is compared with that button’s last release.
  2. A press 120 ms after the release is an ordinary click and adds only to Clicks.
  3. A press 35 ms after the release is too soon for a finger: it also adds 1 to Double clicks.
Gap after release Threshold 50 ms Threshold 80 ms
35 ms Double clickDouble click
60 ms Ordinary clickDouble click
120 ms Ordinary clickOrdinary click

If Double clicks goes up while you click slowly, that switch is chattering. A healthy button stays at 0 with slow clicks at 80 ms.

How it works

  1. Click in the test area with every button — left, right, middle and the two side buttons — and turn the wheel both ways.
  2. Click slowly, one click at a time: if a Double clicks count goes up, that switch is chattering.
  3. Move the mouse fast in circles in the lower area to measure its polling rate in Hz.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my mouse double-click by itself?
The switch under the button is wearing out and bounces, sending two clicks for one press — called chattering. It is common in older mice; the fix is a new switch or a new mouse.
What is a good polling rate?
Office mice report 125 times a second; gaming mice 500 or 1000 Hz, some up to 8000. Higher feels smoother, if the software and screen keep up.
Why does my measured Hz vary?
The rate shows only while the mouse moves fast; slow movement sends fewer reports. The maximum is the best guide.
Why do the side buttons go back a page?
The test stops that where the browser allows it; some browsers or mouse software still navigate — click them inside the area.
Which double-click threshold should I pick?
80 ms suits most tests. 50 ms flags only the fastest bounces; 100 or 150 ms also catches slower ones, but then quick double clicks you make on purpose count too, so click slowly.
Can it measure my mouse’s DPI?
Not on this page. The mouse DPI test does that: you move the mouse a measured distance along a ruler or a bank card, and it counts the reports.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The test runs in your browser; nothing is recorded or uploaded.
