Example
Example: checking a gaming mouse set to 1000 Hz
The mouse’s software says 1000 Hz. Move it fast in circles in the polling-rate box for a few seconds: each measure counts the reports over the last quarter of a second.
- Reports 1.03 ms apart give 971 Hz — within 10 % of 1000, so the page shows 1000 Hz.
- Reports 1.12 ms apart give 893 Hz, more than 10 % below, so 893 Hz is shown as measured.
- A mouse still at the usual 125 Hz sends a report every 8 ms and reads 125 Hz.
| Measured | Shown |
|---|---|
| 118 Hz | 125 Hz |
| 470 Hz | 500 Hz |
| 560 Hz | 560 Hz |
| 940 Hz | 1000 Hz |
| 1090 Hz | 1000 Hz |
| 3700 Hz | 4000 Hz |
A maximum that settles on 1000 Hz confirms the setting. One that stays well below it, such as 893 or 700, means the reports come unevenly: try a USB port on the computer itself rather than a hub, or a cable instead of wireless.
How it works
- Move the mouse quickly in circles inside the polling-rate box.
- Read the maximum, the current and the average rate in hertz, rounded to 125, 250, 500, 1000 Hz and up when close.
- Test the buttons, double clicks and the wheel on the same page if you like.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the polling rate?
- How often the mouse sends its position to the computer: 125 Hz is every 8 ms, 1000 Hz every 1 ms. A higher rate makes movement smoother and a little more responsive, which gamers notice.
- Why does it show less than my mouse’s setting?
- Move faster: a mouse only reports while it moves. Wireless mice may drop the rate on battery saver, and the browser or system can cap very high rates (4000–8000 Hz). Some browsers only report about the screen’s refresh rate.
- How do I change my polling rate?
- In the mouse’s own settings software or with a switch on the mouse; then test again here.
- Can I test clicks and the wheel too?
- Yes — this is the full mouse test: each button, double-click chatter and wheel steps are counted on the same page.
- How do I check if my mouse is really 1000 Hz?
- Move it fast in circles inside the box for a few seconds and read the maximum: a 1000 Hz mouse reads close to 1000. If it stays near 125 or 500, raise the rate in the mouse’s own software, plug it straight into the computer rather than into a hub, and test again.
- Why does it show 893 Hz and not 1000?
- A reading within 10 % of a standard rate (125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 or 8000 Hz) is shown as that rate; anything further off is shown as measured. 893 Hz means the reports came about 1.12 ms apart instead of 1 ms. Move faster for longer, and test on a direct port.
- Is anything sent anywhere?
- No. It is measured in your browser.
