Example

Example: reading the result of the home-row lesson

The English home-row lesson starts with each key three times (fff jjj ddd kkk … ;;;), then groups such as s;kh and made-up words such as laasaf: about 125 to 145 characters with the spaces. Say this run is 135 characters, typed in 1 minute 30 seconds with 7 wrong keys.

  1. Speed counts five characters as a word: 135 ÷ 5 = 27 words in 1.5 minutes = 18 WPM. Spaces count; wrong keys do not.
  2. Accuracy is right keys out of all keys pressed: 135 ÷ (135 + 7) = 95.1%.
  3. A wrong key does not move you on: the lesson waits for the right one, and the keyboard marks the key you hit.
Time for 135 characters Wrong keys WPM Accuracy
2:15 121291.8%
1:30 71895.1%
1:00 32797.8%
0:45 23698.5%

18 WPM at 95.1%: accurate enough to move on to the top row. Below 95%, repeat the lesson slowly before trying to go faster; speed comes with the habit.

How it works

  1. Start with the home row: rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right ones on J K L ; — the bumps on F and J guide you.
  2. Type the letters shown; the on-screen keyboard lights the next key in the colour of the finger that presses it. A wrong key must be fixed before you go on.
  3. When the lesson is done, check your speed and accuracy, then move to the top row, the bottom row, all letters and numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is touch typing?
Typing without looking at the keys, each finger responsible for its own keys. It feels slow for the first days, then overtakes two-finger typing and keeps getting faster.
Which keyboard layouts are used?
The language decides: QWERTY for English, QWERTZ for German, AZERTY for French, the Spanish, Italian, Turkish Q and Brazilian ABNT2 layouts, JIS for Japanese romaji and the 2-set layout (두벌식) for Korean.
How long should I practise?
Ten to fifteen minutes a day works better than one long session. Aim for accuracy above 95% before trying to go faster.
How do I test my speed?
Take the typing test: one minute of common words, scored in words per minute.
How is WPM worked out?
Characters typed correctly, spaces included, divided by five and by the minutes taken: 135 correct characters in 1 minute 30 seconds is 18 WPM. Wrong keys count as errors and lower the accuracy, but add nothing to the speed.
What happens when I press the wrong key?
It is counted as an error and nothing moves on: no backspace needed, just press the right key. The key you hit is marked on the on-screen keyboard, so you can see which finger strayed.
Is my typing sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser; only your best score is kept, on this device.
