Example

Example: New York’s sunrise, sunset and golden hour through the year

City New York, one day at a time, for the March equinox and the two solstices of 2026. Times are local, with daylight saving time where it applies.

  1. Sunrise and sunset are when the top of the sun meets a sea-level horizon, with refraction.
  2. Golden hour lasts while the sun is between 6° above and 4° below the horizon, so a June evening shoot can run from 7:49 PM to 8:51 PM, past sunset.
  3. Blue hour follows, from 8:51 PM to civil dusk at 9:04 PM.
Date Sunrise Sunset Day length Evening golden hour
Fri, Mar 20, 2026 6:59 AM7:08 PM12 h 9 min6:32 PM – 7:25 PM
Sun, Jun 21, 2026 5:25 AM8:31 PM15 h 6 min7:49 PM – 8:51 PM
Mon, Dec 21, 2026 7:17 AM4:32 PM9 h 15 min3:48 PM – 4:51 PM

On the equinox the day is 12 h 9 min, not 12 h: refraction and the width of the sun add a few minutes at each end. Seattle, further north, has 15 h 59 min of daylight on June 21 and 8 h 25 min on December 21.

How it works

  1. Type a city — or switch to coordinates for any place on Earth.
  2. Leave the date empty for today, or pick any day; choose “The whole month” for a table.
  3. Read sunrise, sunset, day length, dawn and dusk, and the golden and blue hours, in local time with summer time.

Frequently asked questions

How are the times worked out?
From the sun’s position by the standard astronomical formulas (Meeus, as used by the NOAA solar calculator), for sea level and a flat horizon. Sunrise and sunset are when the top of the sun touches the horizon, with refraction: in London on 21 June 2026 that is about 4:43 am and 9:22 pm, a day of 16 h 39 min.
What are golden hour and blue hour?
Golden hour is the warm, soft light while the sun is less than 6° above the horizon (down to 4° below); blue hour is the deep-blue twilight when it is 4° to 6° below. Photographers plan shoots around both.
Why does my weather app differ by a minute?
Hills, buildings and the exact spot change the moment you see the sun; the times here are for sea level and a clear horizon, accurate to about a minute.
What about places near the poles?
In summer the sun may not set at all (midnight sun) and in winter not rise (polar night) — the page says so. Use coordinates for places not in the city list.
When is golden hour?
Around sunrise and sunset, while the sun is between 6° above and 4° below the horizon. On 21 June 2026 the evening one lasts 62 minutes in New York (7:49 to 8:51 PM), 54 in Los Angeles and 72 in Seattle: the further from the equator, the longer it lasts.
Can I get a whole month at once?
Yes: choose “The whole month” for a table of every day’s sunrise, sunset and day length, to print or to plan with.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. It is calculated in your browser, and works without a connection.
