Example

From: New York, To: Los Angeles, Unit: Miles.

  1. Straight-line distance: 2,445 mi, which is 3,935 km or 2,125 nautical miles.
  2. Initial direction: W, 274°. The halfway point is 39.51° N, 97.16° W, in Kansas.

Route As the crow flies Flight estimate
Chicago – Miami 1,192 mi (1,918 km)2 h 55 min
Dallas – Denver 662 mi (1,066 km)1 h 50 min
Seattle – Boston 2,485 mi (4,000 km)5 h 30 min
San Francisco – Honolulu 2,395 mi (3,854 km)5 h 20 min

London – New York 3,461 mi (5,570 km)7 h 30 min
Sydney – Perth 2,045 mi (3,291 km)4 h 35 min

2,445 miles in a straight line between the two city centres. The drive is a good deal longer, because roads do not follow the great circle.

How it works

  1. Type two cities — or coordinates such as 48.86, 2.35 for any other place.
  2. Choose kilometres, miles or nautical miles.
  3. Read the straight-line distance, the direction to fly, the midpoint, the time difference and a rough flight time.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Paris from Tokyo?
About 9,712 km (6,035 miles) in a straight line, roughly 12 h 40 min by air. London to New York is about 5,570 km; Madrid to Barcelona 505 km.
Is this the driving distance?
No — it is the great-circle distance over the Earth’s surface, “as the crow flies”. Roads are longer, often by a quarter or more.
How is the flight time estimated?
Distance at 800 km/h plus 30 minutes for take-off and landing. Real flights vary with winds, routes and stops.
How accurate is the distance?
It is worked out on a round Earth, within about 0.5 % of the true distance on the ellipsoid — a few kilometres on a long flight.
What if my town is not found?
Type its coordinates instead, latitude first, such as 40.71, -74.01; a minus sign means south or west. The distance is the same as for the city, and the time zone is guessed from the nearest listed city.
Why does the direction say 274° and not simply west?
It is the direction you set off in. The shortest path over a globe is a curve on a flat map, so the heading changes along the way: New York to Los Angeles starts at 274°, a touch north of west, and London to New York at 288°, west-northwest.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. It is calculated in your browser.
