Example
Lottery odds, a roof pitch and savings growth: six sums typed as written
Six everyday questions, typed the way they are written, with a comma between a function’s values and the angle unit on DEG.
- nCr counts choices where order does not matter: 5 balls of 69 is 11,238,513 combinations, and with 26 bonus balls the odds are 1 in 292,201,338.
- atan is the inverse tangent: a roof rising 6 inches over 12 has a pitch of about 26.57°. On RAD the same entry shows 0.463647609001, the angle in radians.
- Press = after 10000*1.045^10, then type ans-10000: 5529.69421733, the interest earned.
| Question | Typed | Shown |
|---|---|---|
| Ways to draw 5 white balls of 69 | nCr(69,5) | 11238513 |
| … times 26 possible bonus balls: the jackpot odds | nCr(69,5)*26 | 292201338 |
| A 6-from-59 lotto | nCr(59,6) | 45057474 |
| Roof pitch of 6 in 12, in degrees | atan(6/12) | 26.5650511771 |
| $10,000 at 4.5 % a year for 10 years | 10000*1.045^10 | 15529.6942173 |
| Years for that money to double | ln(2)/ln(1.045) | 15.7473018365 |
$10,000 at 4.5 % grows to $15,529.69 in 10 years and doubles in just under 16. The display shows up to 12 significant digits, and whole numbers without thousands separators.
How it works
- Type the calculation with your keyboard or tap the keys — for example 2 sin(30) + √16 or 5! / (2! 3!).
- The result appears as you type; press = or Enter to keep it and carry on from it with ans.
- Switch between degrees and radians with DEG/RAD; earlier calculations stay in the history, ready to reuse.
Frequently asked questions
- Which functions are there?
- sin, cos, tan and their inverses, sinh, cosh, tanh, ln, log, log2 and log with any base, e^x and 10^x, powers and roots, x!, nPr and nCr, abs, round, floor, ceil, min, max, mod, % and the constants π and e.
- Degrees or radians?
- Degrees by default: sin(30) = 0.5 and tan(45) = 1. Switch to RAD for radians, where sin(π) = 0. tan(90°) shows “Not defined” instead of a huge number.
- Why is 6/2(1+2) equal to 1?
- Like most scientific calculators, a multiplication written without a sign — 2(1+2), 2π — is done before division, so 6/2(1+2) is 6/6. Write (6/2)(1+2) for 9.
- Is 0.1 + 0.2 really 0.3 here?
- Yes — results are shown to 12 significant digits with the tiny rounding noise of computer arithmetic tidied away, so 0.1 + 0.2 = 0.3 and sin(180°) = 0.
- How do I work out combinations and permutations?
- nCr(n,r) for combinations, where order does not matter, and nPr(n,r) for permutations, where it does: nCr(69,5) = 11238513, nPr(10,3) = 720. x! is the factorial: 5! = 120.
- How do I type powers and roots?
- ^ for a power (1.045^10), √16 or sqrt(16) for a square root, cbrt(27) for a cube root and 27^(1/3) for any other root; 2E3 is 2 × 10³, 2000.
- Is my history saved online?
- No. The history stays in this browser only; clear it with one click.
