Frequently asked questions

Does it understand feet and inches together?
Yes. 5ft 9in, 5' 9" and 5 feet 9 inches all read as one height, which is how people actually write it. The answer comes back in centimetres.
Why is temperature handled separately?
Because it does not scale the way the others do. Twice as many metres is twice the length, but twice as many degrees Celsius is not twice as hot — the scales have different zero points, so the conversion is a formula rather than a multiplication. Getting that wrong is the classic bug in a hand-rolled converter.
What are 尺, 坪 and 合?
Japanese traditional units still in daily use: 尺 is about 30.3 cm and still sets the size of a sheet of plywood, 坪 is about 3.31 m² and is how floor space is quoted for a flat, and 合 is 180 ml of rice — the mark on every rice-cooker cup.
US or imperial gallons?
Both, listed separately, because they differ by about 20% and a recipe converted with the wrong one is noticeably wrong. The same goes for fluid ounces and pints.
