Example

Example: a $2,500 trip budget in euros and a £120 hotel night, at one day’s rates

Rates change every working day, so this uses an example day on which the European Central Bank published 1 € = 1.1600 US$, 0.8700 £, 1.6200 C$ and 1.7800 A$. The page opens on US dollar → euro, so you only type the amount.

  1. Type “2,500” (or 2500): $2,500.00 = €2,155.17, with “1 USD = 0.862069 EUR · 1 EUR = 1.16 USD”. The ECB quotes everything against the euro, so the dollar rate is 1 ÷ 1.16.
  2. Below, the same $2,500.00 appears in eight more currencies: £1,875.00, ¥377,155, CA$3,491.38, A$3,836.21 and others. Click one to make it the target.
  3. For London, pick From GBP and To EUR: a £120.00 hotel night is €137.93. Swap the pair and €850.00 of spending money is £739.50.
  4. On this English page a dot is the decimal point: “45.50” is forty-five fifty, and “1.000” reads as 1 — type thousands with a comma or with nothing.

A$45.50 Australian dollar → US dollar$29.65

These are reference rates. A card or an exchange desk applies its own rate plus a margin, so the real amount is usually a little worse. The date of the rates is printed under the result.

How it works

  1. Type the amount and choose the currency you have and the one you want.
  2. Read the result and the rate — 1 unit of one in the other — with the date of the rates.
  3. Swap the two with one click; the table shows the same amount in other common currencies.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the rates come from?
From the European Central Bank’s euro reference rates, published every working day at about 16:00 Central European Time for around 30 currencies. Pairs without the euro, like dollar to yen, are worked out through the euro.
Are these the rates my bank will use?
No — they are mid-market reference rates, for information. Banks, cards and exchange offices add a margin or a fee, so what you pay or receive will differ.
Why haven’t the rates changed today?
The reference rates are set once each working day; at weekends and on holidays the last ones stay in use. The date is shown under the result.
Which currencies are there?
About 30: the US dollar, euro, pound, Swiss franc, yen, yuan, won, Turkish lira, Brazilian real, Indian rupee, Canadian and Australian dollar and more.
How do I type cents and thousands?
A dot is the decimal point on this page: 12.50 is twelve fifty. Group thousands with a comma (2,500) or not at all (2500). A comma followed by one or two digits, as in 12,50, is read as cents too; 1.000 reads as one.
Can I convert between two currencies without the euro, like pounds to dollars?
Yes. Every pair is worked out through the euro, which is what the ECB quotes: on the example day 1 USD = 0.75 GBP, because 0.87 ÷ 1.16 = 0.75.
Is anything saved?
No. The page fetches the day’s rates from our server; what you type stays in your browser.
