How it works
- Type the total.
- Put one name per line. Add x2 after a name for a double share, or x1.5 for one and a half.
- Round to the note the table is actually using if you want tidy numbers.
- Read off what each person owes. It is guaranteed to add up.
Frequently asked questions
- Why not just divide?
- Because ¥10,000 between three is ¥3,333.33, and three people paying ¥3,333 leaves the table a yen short. The shares are worked out so they add up to exactly the total — somebody pays ¥3,334 — rather than each being rounded and hoped over.
- Who gets the odd unit?
- Whoever the rounding shortchanged most, and then whoever is carrying the most weight. It is both defensible and how it usually gets settled anyway.
- What if I round to a note that does not divide the bill?
- Then the table puts in more or less than the bill, and you are told which and by how much. A surplus is a tip or goes back; a shortfall is somebody’s to cover. Better to see it than to find out at the till.
- Can somebody pay a different amount?
- Yes: x2 gives a double share, x0.5 a half. Use it for the person who had two drinks, or for a couple counted as one line.
- Is anything sent anywhere?
- No. It is worked out in your browser.
