Example: US men’s 8 to 12 in UK, EU and Japanese sizes

Men’s shoes, starting from the US size. Each size is turned into a foot length first, then into every other system, so each row is what the converter shows for that size.

  1. US and UK sizes step by a third of an inch, EU sizes by two thirds of a centimetre, which is why the EU numbers jump by 1 or 1.5.
  2. Women’s shoes, from US 8: UK 5.5, EU 38, Japan 24, for a foot of 24.1 cm.

How it works

  1. Choose women’s, men’s or kids’ shoes, then the size system you know and your size.
  2. Or measure your foot: stand on paper, mark heel and longest toe, and type the length in cm.
  3. Read the equivalent in every system; your country’s row is highlighted.

Frequently asked questions

A women’s EU 38 is about UK 5½ and US 8, for a foot of 24 cm (JP 24, KR 240). A men’s EU 42 is about UK 8½ and US 9½. US women’s sizes run 1½ above men’s: a men’s US 8 is a women’s 9½.
How are the sizes worked out?
From the foot length, using the standard formulas: EU sizes step by 2/3 cm (Paris points), UK and US by 1/3 inch, Japan and Mexico by 0.5 cm, Korea in millimetres. Brazil is about EU − 2.
Why do my shoes differ between brands?
Each brand has its own lasts and rounds sizes its own way, so treat the result as a starting point and check the brand’s chart — especially between half sizes.
