Example
Example: a Tokyo engineer’s October overtime on ¥320,000 a month
An engineer in Tokyo earns ¥320,000 a month, including a ¥20,000 housing allowance that follows her rent and ¥12,000 for commuting. The company calendar has 125 days off and 8-hour days. In October she worked 30 hours of overtime, 6 of them after 22:00, and 8 hours on the statutory day off. Allowances left out: 32,000.
- Average monthly hours: (365 − 125) × 8 ÷ 12 = 160.00 h.
- Hourly wage: (¥320,000 − ¥32,000) ÷ 160 h = ¥1,800.00.
- Overtime: 30 h × ¥1,800 × 1.25 = ¥67,500. Statutory holiday work: 8 h × ¥1,800 × 1.35 = ¥19,440.
- Late night: the 6 hours after 22:00 are already paid in the overtime line, so only the extra 0.25 is added: 6 h × ¥1,800 × 0.25 = ¥2,700.
| Overtime in the month | Overtime pay | How |
|---|---|---|
| 10 h | ¥22,500 | 10 h × 1.25 |
| 30 h | ¥67,500 | 30 h × 1.25 |
| 60 h | ¥135,000 | 60 h × 1.25 |
| 75 h | ¥175,500 | 60 h × 1.25 = ¥135,000, plus 15 h × 1.5 = ¥40,500 |
Overtime pay for October: ¥89,640. Fractions of a yen are dropped in each part. If her work rules set higher rates than the legal minimum, those apply and her payslip will show more.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the rates?
- Overtime 25 %, beyond 60 hours a month 50 %, statutory holidays 35 %, and 25 % more between 22:00 and 5:00 (art. 37).
- Can my employer’s figure differ?
- Yes: work rules may set higher rates or more days; this applies the legal minimum.
- Which allowances are left out of the hourly wage?
- Family, commuting and housing allowances, pay for living apart from the family, children’s education allowances, one-off pay and bonuses paid less often than monthly. Enter their total under Allowances left out. A housing or family allowance paid as the same flat amount to everyone counts as pay, though, and stays in.
- What counts as the statutory holiday?
- The one day off a week (or four in four weeks) the law requires, usually named in the work rules. Work on another day off, such as the Saturday of a Monday-to-Friday week, is not holiday work at 35 %: it counts as overtime at 25 % once the week passes 40 hours.
- Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
- No. It is worked out in your browser.
