Example

Example: an English teacher who started on 1 August 2023, checked on 1 March 2026

An assistant language teacher started full time, five days a week, on 1 August 2023 and wants to know how many days are left before a trip home in spring. Start: 2023-08-01; days: 5 or more; as of: 2026-03-01.

  1. First grant six months in, on 2024-02-01: 10 days. It lapsed on 2026-01-31, two years later, so whatever was left of it is gone.
  2. 2025-02-01: 11 days, valid to 2027-01-31. 2026-02-01: 12 days, valid to 2028-01-31.
  3. Available: up to 23 days, the 12 new ones plus the 11 carried over, if none of the 11 have been used.
  4. Five of the 12 must be taken between 2026-02-01 and 2027-01-31. Next grant: 14 days on 2027-02-01.
Grant 5 days a week 3 days a week (under 30 h)
2024-02-01 10 days, lapsed5 days, lapsed
2025-02-01 11 days, to 2027-01-316 days, to 2027-01-31
2026-02-01 12 days, to 2028-01-316 days, to 2028-01-31
Available on 2026-03-01 up to 23 daysup to 12 days
Next grant, 2027-02-01 14 days8 days

Up to 23 days, but the 11 carried over lapse on 31 January 2027. On three days a week the same dates give 5, 6 and 6 days, up to 12. These are the legal minimums with 80 % attendance; the school’s work rules may give more.

How it works

  1. Enter the start date.
  2. Choose the scheduled days a week.
  3. Leave “as of” empty for today.
  4. Read the grants, their expiry and the next one.

Frequently asked questions

How many days?
10 after six months, then 11, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 from six and a half years (art. 39), with 80 % attendance.
Can my employer’s figure differ?
Yes: work rules may set higher rates or more days; this applies the legal minimum.
Do part-timers get paid leave in Japan?
Yes, pro rata when they work fewer than five days and under 30 hours a week. From the first grant to the grant at six and a half years: 4 days a week 7 → 15 days, 3 days 5 → 11, 2 days 3 → 7, 1 day 1 → 3. At 30 hours a week or more it is the full scale, 10 → 20.
What happens to days I don’t use?
Each grant lapses two years after it is given, so unused days carry over one year only. The result marks lapsed grants and shows “up to” the days left, assuming none of the last grant was used.
Do I have to take five days a year?
When a grant is 10 days or more, five of them must be taken within the year after the grant date; the result shows that year’s dates. A part-timer on 3 days a week reaches 10 days at five and a half years.
Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
No. It is worked out in your browser.
