Example: laminate for a 15 × 12 ft living room — 10 packs, 11 in herringbone
A living room 15 ft long and 12 ft wide with 2 doorways; the laminate pack says 19.8 sq ft. Units: US, Laying pattern: Straight, extra left empty (10 % for a straight floor).
- Floor area: 15 × 12 = 180 ft². Plus 10 % for cuts: 198 ft².
- Packs: 198 ÷ 19.8 = exactly 10 packs.
- Baseboard: 2 × (15 + 12) − 2 × 3 ft for the doorways = 48 ft. Underlay: the floor area itself, 180 ft².

10 packs (198 ft²), 48 ft of baseboard and 180 ft² of underlay for a straight floor; a diagonal or herringbone floor needs an eleventh pack. Buy them from the same batch.
How it works
- Type the room’s length and width, or the floor area.
- Choose the laying pattern and type the area in a pack from the label.
- You get the flooring with extra for cuts, the packs to buy, the underlay and the baseboard length.
Frequently asked questions
- How much extra flooring should I buy?
- About 5–10 % for a straight layout, 15 % for diagonal or herringbone. Rooms with many corners and doorways need more.
- How much underlay do I need?
- The floor area itself, without the extra: underlay is rolled out edge to edge, not cut piece by piece.
- How is the baseboard length worked out?
- The room’s perimeter, 2 × (length + width), minus about 3 ft (0.9 m) for each doorway.
- Is the result exact?
- It is an estimate from standard figures. Walls are rarely perfectly square and surfaces absorb differently, so buy a little extra from the same batch, and check the figures on the product you choose.
- How many packs of laminate for a 12 × 12 ft room?
- 144 ft² plus 10 % is 158.4 ft²: 8 packs of 19.8 ft² exactly, and still 8 packs of 22 ft² (7.2 rounded up). With one door the baseboard is 45 ft, and the underlay 144 ft².
- Can I type the floor area instead of the length and width?
- Yes. The flooring, packs and underlay are worked out from the area, but the baseboard needs the room’s length and width, so it is left out until you give them.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
