How it works

- A number without a unit is read in the unit you choose.
- Choose the tatami size: listings in Japan count 1.62 m² per jō; the older mat sizes are there for real rooms.
- Each line shows the other units, and several lines are added up.
Frequently asked questions
- How big is a tsubo?
- Exactly 400/121 m², about 3.306 m², the area of two tatami mats. It is the unit Japanese land and house prices are quoted in; Korea uses the same unit as pyeong.
- Why are there several tatami sizes?
- Mats were made to different sizes in different regions and eras: kyōma in Kyoto is 1.82 m², edoma around Tokyo 1.55 m², the danchima of public housing 1.45 m². To keep adverts comparable, Japanese property listings must count 1.62 m² per jō, which is the default here.
- Can it work out the price per tsubo?
- Yes, for prices in yen: a line such as 3,480万円 25.3坪 gets its price per tsubo and per m². A line with 坪単価 (price per tsubo) and an area gets the total price.
- Is anything sent anywhere?
- No. It is worked out in your browser as you type.
