How it works

  1. Type the area to tile, or the length and width of the floor or wall.
  2. Type the tile size and the grout joint, and choose how the tiles are laid.
  3. Type the tiles or the area in a box to see how many boxes to buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Divide the area by the area of one tile plus its joint, then add extra for cuts: 120 sq ft of 12 × 24 in tiles is 60 tiles, 66 with 10 % extra.
How much extra should I buy?
About 10 % for a straight layout, 15 % for diagonal or herringbone, which leave more cut pieces; more for a small room with many corners. Keep a few spare tiles for repairs.
Why does the joint matter?
Each tile covers its own size plus half a joint on every side. With small tiles and wide joints that adds up; with large tiles it hardly changes the count.
Is the result exact?
It is an estimate from standard figures. Walls are rarely perfectly square and surfaces absorb differently, so buy a little extra from the same batch, and check the figures on the product you choose.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
