Example

Example: a Thanksgiving line of emoji built from four searches

A message for the family group chat: โ€œHappy Thanksgiving!โ€ followed by a turkey, a pie, a fallen leaf and folded hands in a medium-dark skin tone. Search each one by name; every emoji you tap is copied and added to Your emoji.

  1. The search reads names and keywords: ๐Ÿฆƒ comes up for โ€œthankโ€ because Thanksgiving is one of its keywords, and ๐Ÿฅง for โ€œpumpkinโ€.
  2. Set Skin tone to Medium-dark before tapping ๐Ÿ™ and it is copied as ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ. Emoji without skin, like ๐Ÿฆƒ and ๐Ÿฅง, stay as they are.
  3. Your emoji now holds ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฅง๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ. Press Copy all and paste it after your text.
You search What comes up You tap
thank 3: ๐Ÿ™ folded hands, ๐Ÿซ‚ people hugging, ๐Ÿฆƒ turkey๐Ÿฆƒ
pumpkin 2: ๐Ÿฅง pie, ๐ŸŽƒ jack-o-lantern๐Ÿฅง
leaf 7, among them ๐Ÿ maple leaf and ๐Ÿ‚ fallen leaf๐Ÿ‚
pray 5, among them ๐Ÿ™ folded hands๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ with Skin tone Medium-dark

โ€œHappy Thanksgiving! ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฅง๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพโ€ in the chat, and the four emoji wait at the front of Recently used on this device for the next message.

How it works

  1. Browse by group or search by name โ€” heart, laugh, cat, flagโ€ฆ Names and keywords work in your language and in English.
  2. Pick a skin tone if you like, then tap an emoji: it is copied and added to Your emoji.
  3. Tap several to build a line, press Copy all, and paste it anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type emoji on a computer?
On Windows press Win + . (period); on a Mac, Ctrl + Cmd + Space. On phones, the emoji key of the keyboard. Copying from here works everywhere, including in forms that have no emoji button.
Why does an emoji show as a box or two emoji?
The device or app is older than that emoji. The newest ones (Unicode 15.1) need recent systems; a family or a couple may show as separate people on older ones.
Where do the names come from?
From the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR), the same names phones use โ€” so you can search in your own language.
Do emoji look the same everywhere?
No. The code is the same, but each system draws its own pictures, so a smile may look a little different on another phone.
How do I find the American flag?
Search โ€œunited statesโ€ and ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ comes up alone. โ€œUSAโ€ and โ€œAmerican flagโ€ find it too (with ๐ŸŒญ hot dog and ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ธ American Samoa), as do โ€œUKโ€ and โ€œUAEโ€ for theirs, and each countryโ€™s flag answers to its two-letter code: โ€œus flagโ€, โ€œjpโ€.
Why does a search show emoji that donโ€™t seem to match?
Any part of a name or keyword counts, so โ€œpieโ€ finds ๐Ÿฅง pie but also ๐Ÿงฉ puzzle piece and ๐Ÿฉฑ one-piece swimsuit. Type a longer word, or two words, to narrow it: every word you type has to match.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. Emoji are copied in your browser; the recently used ones stay on this device.
