How it works

1. Type the name. Everything else is optional.
2. Add the phone, email and company you want on the card.
3. Leave the version at 3.0 unless you have a reason — it is the one every phone reads.
4. Download the .vcf, or paste the text into a QR code so a phone can scan the contact straight in.

Frequently asked questions

3.0 or 4.0?

3.0, unless something specifically wants 4.0. It is from 1998 and every phone, mail client and address book reads it. 4.0 is cleaner — it writes phone numbers as tel: URIs and takes UTF-8 without the ceremony — but support is still patchy in older software, and a contact file that will not import is worth nothing.

How is the name split up?

The format wants surname and given name separately. Typing “Ada Lovelace” gives Lovelace as the surname; for a Japanese or Korean name written surname-first, or a name with a particle like “van der Berg”, check the output and adjust if it guessed wrong — there is no rule that works for every name in the world, and any tool claiming otherwise is simply wrong more quietly.

Can I make a QR code from it?

Yes, and that is the usual reason to generate one. Copy the text and paste it into our QR code generator; a phone camera pointed at the result offers to save the contact.

Why is my Japanese name showing as ????

That is a 3.0 file imported by something that assumed ASCII. This writes UTF-8 either way; if the importing program mangles it, version 4.0 states the encoding more firmly and usually fixes it.
