Example
Example: “Happy birthday Sam!” flipped upside down
Type Happy birthday Sam! with the Upside down style, which the page starts on. The result is ordinary Unicode text, so it pastes into any message.
- Each letter is swapped for its turned look-alike: a → ɐ, y → ʎ, h → ɥ, t → ʇ, r → ɹ, i → ᴉ, b → q, d → p, m → ɯ.
- The order is reversed, so the last letter comes first and the ! turns into ¡ at the front.
- Letters that look the same turned round, such as H, S and o, stay as they are; W becomes M and K becomes ꓘ.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| Happy birthday Sam! | ¡ɯɐS ʎɐpɥʇɹᴉq ʎddɐH |
| Hello world | plɹoʍ ollǝH |
| Why? 123 OK! | ¡ꓘO ƐᄅƖ ¿ʎɥM |
Copy ¡ɯɐS ʎɐpɥʇɹᴉq ʎddɐH into the message: turned round, it reads Happy birthday Sam! Paste it back into the box and it comes out the right way up again.
How it works
- Type or paste your text.
- It is turned upside down and back to front, so it reads correctly when the screen is turned round.
- Copy the result and paste it wherever you like; other styles are one click away.
Frequently asked questions
- How does upside-down text work?
- Each letter is swapped for a character that looks like it turned over — a becomes ɐ, e becomes ǝ, h becomes ɥ — and the order is reversed, so the whole line reads rotated by 180°.
- Why do a few letters look slightly off?
- Not every letter has an exact upside-down twin in Unicode, so some use the closest look-alike.
- Does it work with accents, Japanese or Korean?
- Accented letters are flipped as their plain letter, so the accent is lost: Ünïcödé becomes ǝpoɔᴉu∩. Japanese, Korean and other scripts have no turned look-alikes, so those characters stay as they are, though the line is still reversed: こんにちは comes out はちにんこ.
- Can I turn it back?
- Yes — paste the flipped text in again and it comes out the right way up.
- How do I write upside-down text on my phone?
- Type or paste it here, copy the result and paste it into the app. The flipped letters are ordinary Unicode characters, so no special keyboard or app is needed; an older phone may show a rare one, such as ꓘ, as an empty box if its font lacks it.
- Can I flip several lines?
- Yes. Each line is flipped on its own and the lines keep their order; to read a whole block turned round, put the last line first.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser.
