Example
Example: born 14 July 1995 at 8:30 AM in Chicago
Date 1995-07-14, time 08:30, city Chicago. The page applies Chicago’s time on that date — summer time, UTC−5 — so the birth moment is 13:30 UT.
- Local sidereal time at birth: 03:07:16, at 41.88° N, 87.63° W.
- The ascendant is near the end of Leo: 20 minutes later it would be Virgo, 2 h 16 min earlier Cancer.
- Born at 10:30 AM instead: Virgo rising at 19° 43′, with the same sun and moon signs.
| Sign | Result |
|---|---|
| Sun sign | Cancer 21° 39′ |
| Moon sign | Aquarius 20° 58′ |
| Rising sign (ascendant) | Leo 26° 17′ |
| Midheaven (MC) | Taurus 19° 16′ |
Cancer sun, Aquarius moon, Leo rising — as long as 8:30 is right to within about 20 minutes. Without a time, the page still gives the sun and moon signs (that day the Moon entered Pisces at 11:37 PM). For fun, not a reading.
How it works
- Type your date of birth and, for the rising sign, the time as precisely as you know it.
- Type the city you were born in — or its latitude and longitude.
- Your sun, moon and rising signs appear with their degrees, the midheaven, and how close the rising sign is to changing.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the rising sign?
- The sign of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth — the ascendant. It changes about every two hours, which is why the birth time matters.
- Why do I need the exact birth time?
- The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. The calculator says how many minutes earlier or later the sign would change, so you can see whether an approximate time is enough.
- How is it computed?
- From the astronomy of Jean Meeus: the Sun’s and Moon’s positions, the local sidereal time and the tilt of the Earth’s axis, with the time zone and summer time of your birthplace on that date. The signs are the tropical zodiac most astrologers use.
- Is astrology scientific?
- No — there is no evidence that the signs shape character or fate. The positions are real astronomy; what they mean is up to you. This is for fun.
- What if I don’t know my birth time?
- Leave the time empty: you still get the sun sign and the moon sign, with the time the Moon changed sign if it did that day. The rising sign needs the time, since it changes about every two hours.
- What is a moon sign?
- The sign of the zodiac the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon passes through a sign in about two and a half days, so the date nearly always settles it; on the day it changes sign, the time decides.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The chart is computed in your browser, and your birth details never leave your computer.
