Example
Example: born on May 14, 1992 in New York — Libra moon or Scorpio moon?
Date of birth 1992-05-14, place of birth New York. Without a time, the answer reads “Moon sign: Libra, then Scorpio from 1:16 PM”: the Moon changed sign that afternoon, so the time of birth decides.
- With a time, the Moon’s degree is given: at 1:00 PM it stands at Libra 29° 51′, a quarter of an hour before it enters Scorpio.
- The sun sign, Taurus, is the same all day; the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.
- Born the same day in London, the change comes at 6:16 PM local time; in Los Angeles at 10:16 AM — the same moment in three time zones.
| Born at | Moon sign | Rising sign |
|---|---|---|
| 8:45 AM | Libra 27° 26′ | Cancer 10° 18′ |
| 1:00 PM | Libra 29° 51′ | Virgo 1° 17′ |
| 6:20 PM | Scorpio 2° 52′ | Scorpio 4° 38′ |
| time not given | Libra, then Scorpio from 1:16 PM | needs the birth time |
Born at 8:45 AM in New York: Taurus sun, Libra moon, Cancer rising. Born at 6:20 PM: Taurus sun, Scorpio moon, Scorpio rising. The positions are real astronomy; reading character from them is for fun.
How it works
- Type your date of birth; add the time if you know it.
- Type the city you were born in, so the day and time are read in its time zone.
- Your moon sign appears — with the time the Moon moved into the next sign, if it did that day — and your sun and rising signs.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a moon sign?
- The sign of the zodiac the Moon stood in at your birth. The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a half days, so the date alone is usually enough.
- Why does it say two signs?
- Because the Moon changed sign on your birthday. The time it did is given; with your birth time, the calculator picks the right one.
- How accurate is it?
- The Moon’s position is computed to a few thousandths of a degree with Jean Meeus’s method, the same the site’s moon calendar uses.
- Is astrology scientific?
- No — the Moon’s position is real astronomy, but there is no evidence it shapes character. This is for fun.
- Do I need my birth time to find my moon sign?
- Usually not: the Moon stays about two and a half days in each sign, so on most days the date is enough. On a day it changes sign, the calculator shows both signs and the time of the change, and your birth time settles which is yours.
- Does the place of birth matter?
- For the moon sign only through the time zone: on May 14, 1992 the change came at 1:16 PM in New York, 6:16 PM in London and 10:16 AM in Los Angeles, the same instant. The rising sign depends on the place itself, so it needs both the time and the city.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The chart is computed in your browser, and your birth details never leave your computer.
