How it works

1. Paste or type the address in Japanese with its 7-digit postcode, e.g. 〒150-0002 東京都渋谷区渋谷2丁目21-1.
2. Type the building name in English letters if it has one (Shibuya Hikarie, Park House); the floor and room can stay as 11階 or 203号室.
3. The English address appears on one line, followed by each field: Address line 1, Address line 2, City, State / Prefecture, ZIP and Country.
4. Copy the line or the fields into the form. Several addresses, separated by a blank line, are converted at once.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the English spelling come from?

From Japan Post’s romanised postcode data, which gives the official spelling of every prefecture, municipality and town for each postcode. The tool finds the town your address names under its postcode and turns 丁目・番地・号 into numbers with hyphens, so no kanji has to be guessed.

Why is the postcode needed?

Because it decides the spelling: the same kanji can be read differently in different places, and the postcode points to exactly one entry in Japan Post’s data. Postcodes given to individual large businesses are not in that data.

Why is my building name still in Japanese?

Because most building names are loanwords that cannot be spelled back from kana: パークハウス is "Park House", not "Pakuhausu". Type the building’s own English name as it appears on its sign or website.

In what order should the parts go?

English addresses go from smallest to largest: room and building, then street numbers and town, then city, prefecture, postcode and country — the reverse of Japanese. The one-line version is already in that order.

Is my address sent anywhere?

No. The page downloads only the small part of Japan Post’s data that covers your postcode’s first three digits; the address itself never leaves your device.
