How it works
- Copy the address column from Excel or Google Sheets and paste it in: one address per line. A line with just a postcode gets its address instead.
- Choose what to get back: the postcode alone, or the postcode with the address.
- The answers come in the same order, a blank line for each blank line, so they paste straight back next to the addresses.
- Look at any line marked to check: a town whose postcode depends on the 丁目 or 番地, or a municipality whose name is shared.
Frequently asked questions
- Where do the postcodes come from?
- From Japan Post’s own postcode data, which it lets anyone use and redistribute. The page loads only the part for the municipalities in your list; your addresses never leave the browser.
- How accurate is it?
- Tested against every postcode in Japan Post’s data, it found 99 % from an address made of that entry — including buildings with a postcode per floor. Where a town has several postcodes and the address does not settle which, the likeliest one is given and marked to check rather than passed off as certain.
- Does the prefecture have to be there?
- No. Addresses starting at the city or ward work, and a municipality written without its 郡 is found too. Where a name belongs to more than one prefecture (府中市, 伊達市), the line is marked and adding the prefecture settles it.
- Are large businesses’ own postcodes included?
- No. Japan Post gives some companies and offices a postcode of their own, in a separate list; addresses get the postcode of their street, which mail to them also reaches.
