Frequently asked questions
- What is changed and what is left alone?
- Only kana are converted. Kanji, the long-vowel mark ー, Latin letters, digits and punctuation are left exactly as they are, so a sentence mixing kanji and kana keeps its kanji.
- Can it turn kanji into hiragana?
- Not this tool: most kanji have several readings, and which one is meant depends on the word and the context, which needs a dictionary rather than a table. Kanji to hiragana does it with one, and the Furigana generator puts the readings over the kanji instead.
- Are there kana without a counterpart?
- A few katakana have no hiragana: ヷ, ヸ, ヹ and ヺ, and the small ㇰ-style letters used for Ainu. Those are left as katakana. Every hiragana has a katakana counterpart.
- Is my text uploaded?
- No. The conversion happens in this page and nothing leaves your device.
