Example
Example: a 40-point quiz on the US letter scale, and a score of 33
A quiz worth 40 points, graded on the page’s own scale (US letter grades) in whole points, with one student’s score of 33 typed in. Each grade’s points are rounded up, so a grade always needs at least its percentage.
| Grade | Points | % |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 39 – 40 | ≥ 97% |
| A | 38 | ≥ 93% |
| A− | 36 – 37 | ≥ 90% |
| B+ | 35 | ≥ 87% |
| B | 34 | ≥ 83% |
| B− | 32 – 33 | ≥ 80% |
| C+ | 31 | ≥ 77% |
| C | 30 | ≥ 73% |
| C− | 28 – 29 | ≥ 70% |
| D+ | 27 | ≥ 67% |
| D | 26 | ≥ 63% |
| D− | 24 – 25 | ≥ 60% |
| F | 0 – 23 | < 60% |
33 of 40 points = 82.5% → B−. A B needs 83 %, which is 33.2 points, so 34 in whole points; with half points the line moves to 33.5.
How it works
- Type the test’s total points and choose the grading scale.
- Choose whole or half points, and type a student’s score if you want it graded.
- The scale appears as a table: each grade with the points it needs and the percentage behind them.
Frequently asked questions
- How are the letter grades set?
- By the usual US percentages: A from 93 %, A− from 90, B+ from 87, B from 83 and so on down to D− from 60; below 60 % is an F. The points are rounded up, so a grade always needs at least its percentage.
- What about other countries’ scales?
- The German IHK key (92 % for a 1, 50 % to pass), a linear key with a pass mark of 50 or 60 %, the 0–15 points of the Oberstufe, the French mark out of 20, marks out of 10 for Spain, Italy and Brazil, the Turkish 5-point scale, a score out of 100 and the Korean A–E.
- Why does a grade show a dash?
- On a short test some grades have no whole point of their own: with 10 points, 93 % and 97 % both round up to 10.
- Can I use half points?
- Yes. Choose half points and every threshold is rounded up to the next half point.
- Is 89.5 % rounded up to an A−?
- No: a grade needs its full percentage. 179 of 200 points is 89.5 % and gets a B+; an A− takes 180 points.
- What percentage is a B?
- From 83 % to under 87 %. B+ starts at 87 %, B− at 80 % and C at 73 %. On a 50-point test that is 42 points for a B, 44 for a B+ and 40 for a B−.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
