Example

Example: a first-term GANO for an international student, with a pass/fail course

Daniel (fictitious), in his first term of economics at a university in Istanbul, needs his GANO and its 100-point equivalent for a scholarship form. He copies his transcript, one course a line, letter grade then ECTS: Introduction to Economics BA 6, Mathematics for Economists CB 6, Principles of Accounting AA 5, Academic English BB 4, Turkish for Foreigners I YT 3, Statistics I DC 6.

  1. Each letter becomes its points and is weighted by the ECTS: BA 3.50 × 6 = 21, CB 2.50 × 6 = 15, AA 4.00 × 5 = 20, BB 3.00 × 4 = 12, DC 1.50 × 6 = 9.
  2. 77 points ÷ 27 ECTS = 2.85. Turkish for Foreigners I is graded YT (passed, no letter), so it is listed under Left out and its 3 ECTS do not count.
  3. The 100-point equivalent comes from YÖK’s table: 30 + (2.85 − 1) × 70 ÷ 3 = 73.16, cut rather than rounded, as the table prints it.
  4. Had Statistics I been FF instead of DC, the same 27 ECTS would give 68 ÷ 27 = 2.52, or 65.46 on 100.

Statistics I DC69.00
Turkish for Foreigners I YT3left out
Total 2777.00

Average 2.85, on 100 points (YÖK table) 73.16, on 27 ECTS. Some universities use a conversion table of their own, so for an official form check the one your registrar uses.

How it works

  1. Type each course on a line: its name, the letter grade (AA, BA, BB, CB, CC, DC, DD, FD, FF), then its ECTS or credits.
  2. The GANO appears on the 4.00 scale, with its equivalent out of 100 from YÖK’s conversion table.
  3. Pass/fail courses (G, YT, YZ, M) are left out and listed, as transcripts leave them out of the average.

Frequently asked questions

How is the GANO worked out?
Each letter has its points — AA 4.00, BA 3.50, BB 3.00, CB 2.50, CC 2.00, DC 1.50, DD 1.00, FD 0.50, FF 0 — multiplied by the course’s ECTS (or credits), added up and divided by the total. DZ (failed for absence) counts as FF.
How is it converted to 100 points?
By YÖK’s table for the 4-point system, which runs in equal steps from 1.00 = 30 to 4.00 = 100 (2.00 = 53.33, 3.00 = 76.66). Some universities use their own table; check yours for official use.
Are pass/fail courses counted in the GANO?
No. Courses graded G, YT, YZ or M carry no letter points, so they are left out of the average and listed under Left out, line and all. Their ECTS are not added to the total either.
Is the GANO rounded before it is converted?
Yes. The average is rounded to two decimals first, as a transcript shows it, and that figure is looked up: 2.85 gives 73.16. The table’s result is then cut, not rounded, to two decimals, which is why 3.00 gives 76.66.
What about a course I retook?
Type only the attempt your university counts. If it counts the latest grade, leave the old line out: a course typed twice is counted twice, which pulls the average toward the old grade.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
