Working (non-dealer ron, 1 han 30 fu)
  Base points = fu × 2^(han + 2) = 30 × 2^(1 + 2) = 30 × 8 = 240
  Non-dealer ron = base × 4 = 240 × 4 = 960 → rounded up to the next 100: 1,000

How it works

  1. Choose the han and the fu of the winning hand.
  2. Choose whether the winner is the dealer, and whether they won by ron or tsumo; add the honba counters.
  3. The payment appears first — who pays what — then the calculation and a guide to counting fu.

Frequently asked questions

How are riichi mahjong points calculated?
Base points = fu × 2^(han + 2). A non-dealer’s ron pays 4 times that, a dealer’s 6 times, each payment rounded up to the next 100. 4 han 30 fu: 30 × 64 = 1,920, × 4 = 7,680 → 7,700.
When is a hand a mangan?
When the base points reach 2,000: 5 han always, and 4 han with 40 fu or more, or 3 han with 70 fu or more. Then come haneman (6–7 han), baiman (8–10), sanbaiman (11–12) and yakuman.
How are fu counted?
20 for winning, +10 for a closed ron, +2 for a tsumo, then points for triplets and quads (more for terminals and honors, double if concealed), +2 for a dragon or own-wind pair or a single-wait, rounded up to the next 10. Seven pairs is always 25.
What does honba add?
300 points per counter to a ron, or 100 from each player on a tsumo.
