Online notepad

Write. It saves as you type, right here in your browser.

Your notes are kept only in this browser on this device. They are not uploaded or synced, and clearing this site’s data deletes them. Download anything you want to keep.

Nothing leaves your device

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type, play or record here stays on your device: nothing is uploaded or saved on a server.

Example

Example: a note named by its first line, and the .txt it downloads as

A note typed in four lines: “Call with the landlord: 12 Oak Street”, “Boiler service booked for Tuesday at 9:30”, “Ask about the parking permit”, “Rent goes up to £950 from April?”. It is saved as you type; there is nothing to press.

  1. The list of notes shows it as “Call with the landlord: 12 Oak Street”, its first line with something on it, cut at 60 characters if longer.
  2. Under the editor: 27 words, 141 characters, 4 lines.
  3. Download .txt saves “Call with the landlord 12 Oak Street.txt”: a colon cannot be in a file name, so it becomes a space. A note headed “To do 16/10” downloads as “To do 16 10.txt”.
  4. Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac) opens no save dialog: it stores the note at once and shows Saved.

Close the tab and come back in the same browser: the note is still there, with the others listed newest first. Another browser or device does not have it, so download what matters.

How it works

  1. Start typing: the note saves itself as you write, and is still here when you come back in the same browser.
  2. Press New note for another one; the list shows each note by its first line. The words, characters and lines are counted below.
  3. Press Download .txt to keep a copy as a file, or Full screen to write without distractions.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my notes saved?
In your browser’s own storage on this device — not on a server. They are there when you reopen the page in the same browser, but not on your phone or another browser, and clearing the site’s data deletes them. Download notes you want to keep.
Can I share a note or open it on another device?
No — there is no account and nothing is uploaded. Download the .txt or copy the text and send it however you like.
Does it work offline?
Once the page is open, yes: typing, saving and downloading all happen in the browser.
How are words counted?
By the browser’s word rules for your language, so Japanese, Chinese and Korean text is counted sensibly too. Characters count what you see as one letter or emoji.
What happens if I press Ctrl+S?
The note is written to the browser’s storage straight away and Saved flashes; the browser’s own save dialog does not open. To get a file, press Download .txt.
What is the downloaded file called?
The note’s first line, with the characters a file name cannot hold (: / \ ? * and the like) turned into spaces. An empty note downloads as Untitled.txt.
Can anyone else read my notes?
No. Nothing is sent anywhere; anyone using this same browser profile could open the page and see them, though.
