Frequently asked questions

How do Japanese era years work?
An era (gengō) begins when a new emperor takes the throne, and years are counted from one inside it: Reiwa 1 is 2019, Reiwa 8 is 2026. The first year is written 元年 (gannen) rather than 1年. Government forms, bank paperwork, driving licences and residence cards use era years, which is why a Western year so often has to be converted.
Why does 1989 give two answers?
Because the era changes on the day the emperor changes, not on New Year's Day. 1989 was Shōwa 64 until 7 January and Heisei 1 from 8 January; 2019 was Heisei 31 until 30 April and Reiwa 1 from 1 May. Enter the full date and you get the one era it belongs to.
What do H, S and R mean?
They are the initials used on forms and cards: M for Meiji, T for Taishō, S for Shōwa, H for Heisei, R for Reiwa. R5.4.1 is 1 April in Reiwa 5, which is 2023. Full-width characters, as typed on a Japanese keyboard, are read too.
A document says Heisei 32. Is that a mistake?
Cards and forms printed before the 2019 change sometimes carry years Heisei never reached. Heisei 32 is 2020, which is Reiwa 2. The converter gives the Western year and names the correct era, and does the same for a date such as Heisei 31, 1 May, which fell after the change.
Can it convert Meiji dates?
Years, from Meiji 1 (1868). Japan kept the lunar calendar until the end of Meiji 5, so a month and day from those years are not the Western month and day with the same numbers; those dates are converted by year only, and the result says so. From 1873 dates are converted exactly.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. It is all worked out in this page. Dates of birth are personal data and they stay on your device; the age is counted from your device's date.
