What is a nenrei hayamihyō?

An age chart: a table of birth years with their era years and ages, printed in Japanese diaries, on application guides and at city offices, because so many forms ask for a birth year in era form and an age at the same time.

Which date is the chart for?

The year of the day you open the page, taken from your device's date. When the year changes, the chart changes with it. Outside the brackets is the age after this year's birthday, inside them the age before.

The traditional way of counting age in Japan, where a baby is one at birth and everybody gets a year older on New Year's Day. It is still used for shrine festivals and unlucky years (yakudoshi). It equals the age after this year's birthday plus one.

Why do some years have two eras?

Because the era changes on the day a new emperor takes the throne. Someone born on 7 January 1989 was born in Shōwa 64, someone born on the 8th in Heisei 1. The chart names both halves of those years and the day between them.
