Giulia Bianchi, an invented person, was born in Milano on 23 April 1992. Her code is BNCGLI92D63F205Y; typed in lower case with spaces it reads the same.
- With an X at the end instead, the decoder says the first 15 characters call for Y: most likely a typing error.
- BNCGLI92D63F20RT is valid too: R stands for 5 (omocodia), and the decoder gives back BNCGLI92D63F205Y, the code without the substitution.
- RSSMRA05A01H501H gives a man born on 1 January 2005 in Roma, or in 1905, since the code has only two digits for the year.

How it works
- Type or paste the 16-character codice fiscale; spaces and lower case are fine.
- The check character is verified first — if it is wrong, you see which one was expected.
- Then the sex, the date and the place of birth are read back from the code.
Frequently asked questions
- Can the name be read from a codice fiscale?
- No. The six letters are only consonants and vowels taken from the surname and name; very many names share them.
- What is omocodia?
- When two people would share a code, the Agenzia delle Entrate replaces digits with letters (0=L … 9=V), from the right. The decoder undoes it and shows the code without substitutions.
- Does a valid check mean the code exists?
- No — only that it is correctly written. Whether it has been issued, and to whom, only the Agenzia delle Entrate can say.
- Why two possible years?
- The code has only two digits for the year, so 05 can be 1905 or 2005; the decoder names the likelier one.
- How can I tell the date of birth and sex from a codice fiscale?
- Characters 7 and 8 are the year, the 9th is the month (A January, B February, C March, D April, E May, H June, L July, M August, P September, R October, S November, T December), and 10 and 11 are the day. Women have 40 added to the day, so 63 is the 23rd.
- What if the check character is wrong?
- The decoder says which character the first 15 call for (for BNCGLI92D63F205X it is Y) and still reads the rest, with a warning to treat it with caution. Usually one character was mistyped.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer; the list of comuni comes from our own site.
