Example: the codice fiscale of a man born in the United States

John Smith, male, born 4 July 1990 in the United States, moving to Italy. Type the country as the place of birth, since he was not born in an Italian comune.

SMT Smithfirst three consonants of the surname
JHN Johnthe first name’s three consonants

L Julyletter of the month (A January … T December)

SMTJHN90L04Z404Y. Decoding it gives back male, 4 July 1990, United States of America. The code the Agenzia delle Entrate issues is the official one; in rare cases (omocodia) it differs.

How it works

  1. Type the surname and first name as on your documents, choose the sex and the date of birth.
  2. Type the comune of birth — or the country, if you were born outside Italy.
  3. The codice fiscale appears with how each part is formed, down to the check character.

Frequently asked questions

How is the codice fiscale formed?
Three letters from the surname, three from the first name, the last two digits of the year, a letter for the month, the day (plus 40 for women), the four-character code of the comune or foreign country, and a check character.
Is the result my official codice fiscale?
It is the code the rules give. When two people would get the same code, the Agenzia delle Entrate changes some digits to letters (omocodia), so the code it issued can differ. The official one is on your tessera sanitaria or the Agenzia’s certificate.
What if I was born abroad?
Type the country: foreign births use the country’s code, which starts with Z (Germany Z112, United States Z404) instead of a comune’s.
Two comuni have the same name — which is mine?
Add the province, as in “Castro (LE)”; the calculator lists the comuni of that name with their provinces.
Why are only some consonants of my first name used?
With more than three consonants, the first name takes the 1st, 3rd and 4th: Christopher (C H R S T P H R) gives CRS. A surname always takes the first three: Smith gives SMT.
What if my name is very short?
Vowels follow the consonants, and X fills any place still empty: Li gives LIX, Ana gives NAA.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer; the list of comuni comes from our own site.
