Example

Example: a Year 3 spelling list played as a word search on the easy level

A parent turns this week’s spelling words, the first twelve of the Year 3 and 4 statutory list, into a puzzle: accident, actually, address, answer, appear, arrive, believe, bicycle, breath, breathe, build, busy. Words: My own words. Level: Easy.

  1. Paste the words, separated by commas or one to a line, and press Make puzzle. Words of one letter and repeats are left out.
  2. The 12 words have 77 letters. The grid starts at the largest of the level’s 10, the longest word (8) and √(77 × 1.6) ≈ 11.1, rounded up, so the easy grid becomes 12 × 12.
  3. On easy every word runs left to right or top to bottom, and the list beside the grid stays in the order you typed it.
  4. BREATH can be circled inside BREATHE: any straight line that spells a word not yet found counts.

A 12 × 12 grid with every spelling word in it, different each time you press New puzzle. The clock starts at the first letter touched and stops at the last word; Show a word helps a stuck child and is counted under Words shown. The list is kept in this browser for next week’s session.

How it works

  1. Choose the words — animals, food, nature, colours, jobs or your own — and the level.
  2. Drag across a word in the grid (or click its first and last letter); found words are crossed off.
  3. Find them all to stop the clock; press New puzzle for another grid.

Frequently asked questions

How do I select a word?
Press on its first letter and drag to the last, or click the first letter and then the last. Words run in straight lines: across and down on easy, also diagonally on medium, and backwards too on hard.
Can I use my own words?
Yes — choose “My own words”, type up to 30 words and press Make puzzle. Great for spelling lists and vocabulary practice.
Is it good for children?
Yes — the easy level uses a 10 × 10 grid with words only across and down, and the built-in lists are everyday words.
Can I print it?
This page is for playing on screen; to print word searches with an answer key, use the printable word search maker.
How many words are in each puzzle?
With a built-in list, 8 words on easy (10 × 10 grid), 11 on medium (12 × 12) and 15 on hard (15 × 15), drawn at random from the list. With your own words, all of them up to 30, and the grid grows as far as 20 × 20 to fit them.
What happens to a word that does not fit?
It is listed under “Did not fit in the grid” instead of being hidden. That happens to words longer than 20 letters, and rarely to a word that finds no room in a full 20 × 20 grid; shorten the list or split it over two puzzles.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The puzzle is made and played in your browser.
