Example

Example: words from the letters G A R D E N S

Seven letter tiles. With “Words made from these letters” and Shortest word set to 4 letters, the finder lists 94 words, longest first and the commonest first within each length.

  1. Anagram mode with LISTEN: SILENT and ENLIST, the words that use every letter.
  2. Pattern mode with s??ar: SUGAR, SOLAR, SWEAR, SPEAR, SMEAR, SHEAR, SONAR, SAMAR.
  3. Pattern mode with *ight: 76 words, from RIGHT and NIGHT to HEAVYWEIGHT.
Length First words listed
7 letters DANGERS
6 letters GARDEN, DANGER, GRADES, RANGES, GRANDE …
5 letters RANGE, GRAND, GRADE, ANGER, READS …
4 letters READ, NEAR, SEND, DEAR, ENDS …

The best play is DANGERS, all seven tiles. The words come from everyday frequency lists, not a game dictionary, so a name such as EDGAR can appear among them.

How it works

  1. Type your letters — a ? stands for a blank tile that can be any letter.
  2. Choose what to find: every word the letters make, the anagrams that use them all, or the words fitting a pattern such as c?t or *ing.
  3. The words appear grouped by length, the longest and the commonest first.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the words come from?
From the 40,000 most frequent words of each language in wordfreq, a list built from books, subtitles, Wikipedia and the web. Common words come first; it is not a Scrabble dictionary, so a few names can appear and some rare words allowed in games are missing.
How do blanks and patterns work?
Among letters, a ? (or *) is a blank that stands for any one letter. In a pattern, ? or _ is one unknown letter and * any run of letters: c?t finds cat and cut, *ing every word ending in ing.
Do accents count?
As in word games: in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French an accent does not make a different letter (but Spanish ñ is its own letter); Turkish ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü and German ä, ö, ü are letters of their own, and ß counts as ss.
Can it unscramble letters into one word?
Yes — choose “Anagrams — words using every letter”: LISTEN gives SILENT and ENLIST, GARDEN gives DANGER, GRANDE, RANGED and GANDER.
How do I find words for a crossword with missing letters?
Choose the pattern mode and type the letters you know, with ? for each gap: s??ar finds SUGAR, SOLAR, SWEAR, SPEAR, SMEAR, SHEAR, SONAR and SAMAR. Use * for a run of any length, as in *ight.
Is anything uploaded?
No. It is worked out in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
