How it works

1. Type text to get Morse, or paste Morse to get text.
2. Letters are separated by spaces and words by a slash, which is the usual written convention.
3. Dots and dashes can be typed as . and -, or as · and –.
4. Anything with no Morse equivalent is left as it is rather than dropped.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write the gaps?

A space between letters, a slash between words: “.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..”. That is the standard way of writing Morse down. Reading it, the translator also accepts a double space for a word break, which is the other common habit.

What is SOS?

... --- ... — and it is not an abbreviation for anything. It was chosen in 1906 because it is unmistakable to hear and hard to garble, and the “save our ship” reading was invented afterwards.

Does it do numbers and punctuation?

Digits, full stop, comma, question mark, apostrophe, slash, brackets, colon, equals, plus and at. The @ sign is the newest addition to international Morse, added in 2004 so email addresses could be sent.

What about other alphabets?

International Morse covers the Latin alphabet. Japanese has its own code, Wabun, with entirely different patterns for kana — this page does not translate it, and pretending it could would produce confident nonsense.
