- Why use lorem ipsum instead of real text?
- Placeholder text has a natural distribution of word lengths without readable meaning, so reviewers look at the layout, typography and spacing rather than reading the words. It also avoids shipping mockups with unfinished or misleading copy.
- Where does lorem ipsum come from?
- It is a scrambled excerpt from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, and has been used by typesetters since the 1500s. The words are not meaningful Latin, which is exactly the point.
- What is the Japanese option for?
- Latin text is a poor test for Japanese layouts: the lines have no spaces, line breaks can occur between almost any characters, and full-width punctuation behaves differently. The Japanese option produces natural-looking dummy sentences in kanji and kana so you can check line height, wrapping and font rendering properly.
- Does the text always start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?
- Yes, the Latin option starts with the traditional opening so the placeholder is instantly recognisable as dummy text. The rest is generated from the classic word list.
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. The text is generated in your browser. No request is made and nothing is stored.
